What is IMAP

What IMAP?

Introduction

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a set of rules for storing, accessing and working with e-mail on a post office server. IMAP allows you to work with your mail on the mail server, where it can be accessed from multiple locations and computers.

Users who have a high level of comfort with computers, and a willingness to spend time learning a new e-mail configuration, may want to consider using IMAP. IMAP will be most beneficial to users who frequently access e-mail from multiple computers and/or from multiple computing platforms.

What is POP? What is IMAP?
Post Office Protocol (POP) is designed so that when the user checks his or her mail, it is downloaded onto the local machine, and deleted from the server. There is an option available to leave mail on the server, and to access it from multiple machines. The messages will, however, be downloaded, as new messages, on each machine. T

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is designed so that mail is stored in mailboxes and folders on the server. The user transfers a copy of an e-mail to his or her local machine to view it, but the e-mail remains on the server until the user actively deletes it. If the mail is lost on the server, and has not been backed up on a local machine, it cannot be recovered.
