SSH Setup for Windows
SSH Setup for Windows

This webpage describes the steps you need to take to install and configure the site-licensed version of SSH for Windows.
  • You may want to print these instructions before you begin the download process
  • Download SSH for Windows
  • If necessary, close or minimize your browser and use Windows Explorer Search/Find to find the folder where SSHWin was downloaded
  • Double-click SSHWinClient-3.0.0.exe which will automatically "extract" the files
  • Follow the InstallShield Wizard's instructions
    • it is usually best to use the installation defaults
    • click Next to proceed through the installation
  • The InstallShield Wizard sets up 2 shortcuts on your desktop
SSH Secure Shell Client is for computing within your Unix account on research.kent.edu
SSH File Transfer Client is for secure file copies to and from that account

SSH is now installed and you need to set it up to talk with the University System. To configure SSH you could use the SSH Secure Shell shortcut or the SSH File Transfer shortcut, but we'll use the computing shortcut because it is the most useful

  • Double-click the SSH Secure Shell Client desktop shortcut
  • Under Edit select Settings

  • Under Profile Settings highlight Connection
  • As in the example below:
    • Set Host Name to research.kent.edu or mail.kent.edu
    • Set User Name to your kent account name
    • Choose Password authentication
    • Click OK

  • Back at the SSH Secure Shell window click the button Quick Connect

  • A login window appears with the Connection information you just set up
  • Enter your Password here

  • Up in the corner if a small box appears, asking if you want to Add Profile, just close the box for now
  • You are now logged in to research.kent.edu.
