Web-based SSH
Web-Based SSH

This webpage describes the steps for using SSH via your web browser to connect to research.kent.edu. Your browser will run an AppGate Java SSH client which may require Java plug-ins that you do not have.

This SSH client does not work on Macintoshes.
  • Verify that Java is enabled in your browser's Preferences (Netscape) or Internet Options (IE)
  • Click Java link for instructions on setting your preferences.
  • In your browser for the Location or Address enter www.personal.kent.edu

  • A warning shows up in your browser window along with one or two other, smaller warning windows. Grant permission in those windows.

  • A new window (MindTerm/AppGate) opens
  • If the Server/Alias at the bottom is not already set to zoloft.net.kent.edu, enter that (you may need to press Enter first)

  • In that new window you will be prompted for your login (User ID) and password
  • You are now logged into research.kent.edu in Shell or Menu mode, depending what your default is.

  • In that new window you will be prompted for your login (User ID) and password (Over type helpdesk with your userid ID and press Enter.)
  • You are now logged into research.kent.edu in Shell or Menu mode, depending what your default is.
  • To copy files to and from research.kent.edu select the SCP File Transfer.... found under File on the main menu.

  • Under File select SCP File Transfer and you'll get a window with your local and remote files listed

  • Navigate to find the the specific directories/files you want on both the Local and Remote systems by highlighting [..] and clicking ChgDir
  • In the Change Directory window that opens you can enter C:\ if your local system is a PC; a directory listing is displayed under Local System; then you can navigate your C-drive to find a file you want to send; on the remote side you can enter public_html to point to that remote directory.
  • If you copied a webpage to research.kent.edu, verify that the public can view it by trying to view it yourself with a browser. If you get a "Forbidden" error, you do not need to set permisions for the public to view your page
  • Remember to exit your SSH window when you have finished copying files and computing on zoloft.net.kent.edu so no one else has access to your account. To exit just click the red x in the upper right-hand corner of ther screen.
