Cryptainer Encryption Software

Cryptainer is Kent State University's supported file encryption product.

Cryptainer creates an encrypted volume ( accessible via a drive letter, usually E: ) that is stored in a single file, similar to a zip file. Cryptainer volumes are password protected, and can be stored on your computer, or on a network drive.

More information and downloads are available at http://helpdesk.kent.edu/security/cryptainer

PKI (Public Key Infrastructure)

Web Server SSL Certificates

Kent State has contracted with GeoTrust, a prominent commercial Certification Authority (CA), to provide secure website SSL certificates.  Per University policy, only GeoTrust SSL certificates are acceptable for use on university-operated web sites, unless an exception has been granted, such as on the basis of technical or contractual requirements.  The cost of a GeoTrust certificate is $115, and will be charged to the department by which it is used.  Certificates must renewed each year.
A commercially signed SSL certificate from GeoTrust is not required for test systems; however, it is recommended that such servers use a certificate signed by the Kent State certificate authority.

Secure Media Disposal

Hard drives from retired PC's, diskettes, CD/DVD's, and tapes should never simply be thrown away.  Data can easily be recovered from deleted files or formatted disks if proper precautions are not taken.  Secure media disposal services are available from Data Center Operations.  If you have any media that you would like to be disposed of securely, please call 330-672-3700 to arrange a pickup.  More details are available at http://www.kent.edu/Administration/is/Data-Disposal.cfm.
